Raja Shivaji Rewrites Marathi Cinema History With Rs. 61 Crore Opening Week — But Can It Cross Rs. 100 Crore?

Bollywood June 21, 2026 By FilmiTalk

Riteish Deshmukh has done something genuinely special with Raja Shivaji. Crossing Rs. 61.25 crore gross in its opening week, the film has more than doubled Sairat’s previous Marathi record of Rs. 26 crore — and that is no small feat. For a regional language film to command these kinds of numbers, with strong performances even in its original Marathi version at Rs. 42.25 crore, speaks volumes about the emotional connect audiences have with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy.

However, let’s be honest — there is a bittersweet feeling here. This film was always being measured against Tanhaji and Chhaava, two Maratha Empire epics that collected Rs. 175 crore and Rs. 300 crore respectively in Maharashtra. Raja Shivaji tells the story of the empire’s very founder, made authentically in Marathi, and yet it appears those lofty benchmarks are out of reach now.

The second weekend is absolutely make-or-break territory. A strong second Friday above Rs. 4 crore could keep the Rs. 100 crore milestone alive. So FilmiTalk readers, do you think Raja Shivaji has enough momentum left to make history twice?
