Patriot Box Office Disappointment: Mammootty-Mohanlal’s Dream Reunion Fails to Ignite Kerala Screens

Bollywood June 21, 2026 By FilmiTalk

When Mammootty and Mohanlal announced they were sharing the screen together after nearly 18 years, the entire South Indian film industry collectively lost its mind. The excitement was real, the anticipation was massive, and the projections of Rs. 100 crore felt completely justified. So what went wrong?

Patriot has limped to just Rs. 23.15 crore in Kerala after six days, with collections nosediving from a promising Rs. 8.50 crore opening to a barely-there Rs. 1.20 crore on Day 6. That brutal cliff-drop tells its own story. Director Mahesh Narayanan, known for his intense slow-burn narratives, may have misjudged how patient today’s multiplex audience truly is.

With a stellar supporting cast including Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, and Revathy, there was truly no excuse for weak turnout. Closing the first week at Rs. 25 crore feels underwhelming for what was billed as a generational cinematic event.

The second weekend is absolutely make-or-break for Patriot. Could word-of-mouth still save this spy thriller, or has the damage already been done?
